What do hybrid cars do when they run out of charge?

SCIKOTIC TC asked:

I’m doing this for a class project and I need help, so here’s my question.

What do hybrid cars do (such as the Prius) when the battery doesn’t have charge anymore and you don’t use the regenerative braking as much to recharge the battery?
emiller, you answer doesn’t relate to my question, thanks anyway.

They use the gasoline engine to drive the car and to charge the batteries.

Hybrids run with a gas motor in almost every situation. They can only travel a very short distance and at a very low speed under electric only power. Basically the electric motor is only to help the tiny gas motor.

since current hybrids use a gas engine to power the car, your question doesnt make any sense. if on the other hand hybrids were electrically powered, and used the gas engine to run a generator to recharge the batteries, and run the electrical system, then you would have a situation where you would have to gas up the generator to recharge the batteries enough to get the car going again.

in current hybrids if the electic motor quits running for what ever reason, the car has reduced power to run on since the electric “helper motor” is unavailable to assist in powering the car.
